Tour Overview
This active five-day itinerary reaches remote Mahale through Kigoma rather than presenting the park as a simple road safari. From Kigoma, travel for roughly four to five hours by road to Kalilani Village and continue for another two to three hours by boat across Lake Tanganyika. Two full days are reserved for ranger-led chimpanzee trekking, forest exploration and time along Mahale’s beach before the return journey and a Livingstone Memorial visit.
Route: Dar es Salaam → Mahale Mountains National Park → Dar es Salaam

Detailed Day-by-Day Itinerary
Forest routes, wildlife locations, lake conditions and domestic-flight times can change. LuiTours keeps the stated sequence while adjusting daily timing for safety and current park instructions.
Transfer from the Dar es Salaam hotel to the airport for the flight to Kigoma. Meet the western Tanzania team and drive approximately four to five hours to Kalilani Village. From there, board the boat for the two-to-three-hour crossing to Mahale Mountains National Park. Arrive in the late afternoon, settle in and enjoy the lakeshore sunset or a swim where the lodge team confirms conditions are safe.
Meals: Meals according to flight timing, plus dinner
Accommodation: Confirmed Mahale lodge, camp or bandas
After breakfast, receive a park briefing and enter the mountain forest with rangers. The length and difficulty of the trek depend on the chimpanzees’ position. Once a group is located, follow the current observation rules and watch quietly from the instructed distance. Return to the lakeshore for lunch and time to rest.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Accommodation: Confirmed Mahale lodge, camp or bandas
Set out on a second guided trek, allowing another opportunity to see the chimpanzees and a different part of Mahale’s forest. Between activities, enjoy the park’s birdlife, mountain scenery and beach. Optional lake activities depend on weather, equipment and local safety guidance.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
