Tour Overview
This deeper Mahale programme includes international-arrival recovery in Dar es Salaam, a cultural day in Kigoma and the long boat approach across Lake Tanganyika. Two standard chimpanzee trekking days are followed by a separate habituation experience, subject to the correct special permit and current park approval. Time at the lakeshore allows the pace to remain measured before the return boat, Kigoma flight and final Dar es Salaam departure.

Detailed Day-by-Day Itinerary
Forest routes, wildlife locations, lake conditions and domestic-flight times can change. LuiTours keeps the stated sequence while adjusting daily timing for safety and current park instructions.
Meet the LuiTours representative at Julius Nyerere International Airport and transfer privately to the hotel. The day remains free for rest and a briefing on baggage, domestic-flight timing, boat travel and the physical demands of Mahale’s forest trails.
Meals: Meals according to arrival arrangements
Accommodation: Hyatt Regency Dar es Salaam, The Kilimanjaro
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for the domestic flight to Kigoma. A local guide meets you for an orientation that includes Ujiji Museum, also known as Livingstone House, and the history of the Livingstone–Stanley meeting. Check in at the Kigoma hotel for dinner and overnight.
Meals: Breakfast and dinner
Accommodation: Kigoma Hilltop Hotel
Transfer to Kigoma’s port and board a private or shared boat for the several-hour journey to Mahale Mountains National Park. The route follows a remote shoreline of mountains and fishing communities. On arrival, receive a lodge orientation and spend the remaining afternoon relaxing, swimming where safe or enjoying the beach.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Accommodation: Mango Tree Bandas
After an early breakfast, attend the ranger briefing on forest conduct and chimpanzee observation. Track a habituated community through the mountain forest; the route and walking time depend on the animals’ location. Once found, standard observation time and distance rules apply. Return to the bandas for lunch and a relaxed lakeside afternoon.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Accommodation: Mango Tree Bandas
Make a second ranger-led trek, increasing the chance to observe different behaviours or another section of the chimpanzees’ range. After returning to the lakeshore, use the afternoon for kayaking, fishing or beach time where these activities are available and conditions are suitable.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Accommodation: Mango Tree Bandas
Join the specially permitted habituation activity for a longer period of field observation with a chimpanzee group being accustomed to carefully managed human presence. The reference programme allows up to four hours, but the actual duration, group access and rules depend on the permit and current park authority guidance. Return to the bandas to rest after the extended forest day.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
