Best Time to Visit

Mikumi National Park offers good game viewing year-round. The dry season (June - October) is considered peak season - wildlife concentrates around the permanent water sources and the Mkata floodplain, making sightings particularly reliable. The green season (November - May) brings lush vegetation and excellent birdlife, though some areas may be less accessible after heavy rains. Lion, elephant, and hippo are present in good numbers throughout the year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Mikumi National Park is approximately 5-6 hours by road from central Dar es Salaam, along the main Dar es Salaam - Zambia highway. The drive is comfortable and passes through interesting landscape - the coastal plain, the Uluguru Mountains, and the Morogoro valley before descending into the park. A hot lunch stop in Morogoro is included in the Day 1 itinerary. The park's location on the main highway means that road conditions are generally good year-round.
Mikumi's most reliable wildlife sightings include elephant (very large resident herds), Masai giraffe, hippo (at the hippo pool), buffalo (very large floodplain herds), wildebeest, zebra, and impala. Lion sightings are regular on the Mkata floodplain - this is one of southern Tanzania's most reliable lion destinations. The hippo pool is a near-guaranteed highlight - a large permanent pool with hippos and crocodiles at close range. Over 400 bird species are recorded, making this an excellent birding destination.
Two days gives you a very good Mikumi experience - an afternoon arrival drive, overnight inside the park, and a morning game drive covering the park's best zones. You will typically see the major wildlife in this time. However, guests who want more depth, different game drive areas, or greater flexibility should consider the 3-day Mikumi itinerary, which adds a full day in the park and allows the guide to explore a wider range of habitats and pursue specific sightings with more patience.
Yes - your return drop-off can be to your Dar es Salaam hotel, Julius Nyerere International Airport, or the Zanzibar ferry terminal at Kivukoni. Please let us know your onward schedule when booking so we can adjust the Day 2 departure time from the park accordingly. We will always ensure you have adequate time for your onward connection.
