Best Time to Visit

Both Mikumi and Nyerere offer excellent game viewing year-round. The dry season (June - October) is peak season for both parks - wildlife concentrates around water sources, predator activity peaks, and the boat safari produces the most dramatic hippo and crocodile concentrations. The green season provides lush scenery and exceptional birding, with over 400 species active in both parks. The combination of two parks means the itinerary delivers rewarding wildlife in every month of the year.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Day 2 transfer is long but passes through remarkable scenery - some of Tanzania's most remote and untouched wilderness corridor. Our vehicles are comfortable 4x4 Land Cruisers with adequate seating, and the journey includes breaks. Packed lunches are provided. Many guests find the drive itself a highlight - the sense of remoteness and the changing landscapes are genuinely impressive, and the arrival at the Rufiji and the evening boat safari make the journey immediately worthwhile.
They are different rather than one being better. Mikumi excels for open savannah game viewing, particularly lions on the Mkata floodplain and large elephant and buffalo herds in accessible terrain. Nyerere excels for its multi-activity nature - the boat safari on the Rufiji, the possibility of African wild dog, and the vast scale and ecological diversity of Africa's largest protected area. The combination of both in this itinerary delivers the full range of what southern Tanzania's wildlife has to offer.
Yes - LuiTours offers a range of extended southern circuit itineraries with additional nights in both Mikumi and Nyerere, as well as options that add Ruaha National Park, Udzungwa Mountains, and the Kilwa Beach coastal destination. Contact us on WhatsApp to discuss extended itinerary options tailored to your schedule and interests.
Camp Lilac Mikumi in Mikumi is a comfortable mid-range safari camp inside the park, offering an authentic bush experience with good food and the sounds of the African night. Selous Safari Lodge in Nyerere is similarly positioned - a well-appointed lodge with excellent access to both the game drive zones and the Rufiji River boat launch. Both lodges provide the classic southern Tanzania safari lodge experience at an excellent price point.
