Best Time to Visit

All three parks offer excellent year-round game viewing, with each having its own seasonal highlights. The dry season (June - October) is peak for all three - wildlife concentrates around water, predator activity peaks, and the Ruaha River's reduced flow creates extraordinary crocodile and hippo concentrations. The green season brings exceptional birding across all three parks, with over 570 species active in Ruaha alone, plus lush scenery and fewer visitors. Nyerere's boat safari is rewarding in every season.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ruaha is Tanzania's largest national park and arguably its most remote major wildlife destination. Where Nyerere excels for the boat safari and African wild dog, and Mikumi for accessible open savannah, Ruaha offers an unmatched sense of wilderness - vast, largely unvisited, and home to one of Africa's largest lion populations (estimated at over 10% of the global total). The addition of greater kudu, the Ruaha River crocodile concentrations, and exceptional birding make Ruaha a destination that many experienced safari-goers rate as their single favourite park in Tanzania.
All drives are made in comfortable 4x4 Land Cruisers with adequate seating, and the routes between parks pass through scenery that is genuinely rewarding - particularly the highland drive to Ruaha via Iringa. Packed lunches and rest stops are included for all long transit days. The transfer distances are significant (particularly Mikumi to Ruaha at approximately 274 km) but the journey is considered part of the adventure, and wildlife sightings from the vehicle during transit are common.
Yes - LuiTours offers extended itineraries incorporating Udzungwa Mountains (excellent primate trekking and the spectacular Sanje Waterfalls), Kilwa Beach (Indian Ocean relaxation and the UNESCO Kilwa Kisiwani heritage site), and additional nights in any of the three parks. Our 8-day and 10-day southern circuit itineraries include Udzungwa and additional Ruaha time. Contact us on WhatsApp for a personalised extended itinerary.
All three parks are outstanding for birds, but Ruaha is the standout birding destination with over 570 recorded species - including numerous Miombo woodland endemics and European winter migrants. The combination of the Ruaha River, baobab woodland, and open grassland habitats creates exceptional diversity. Nyerere's riverine habitats are particularly rewarding for waterbirds and raptors, while Mikumi is excellent for open-country species. A dedicated birding morning in any of the three parks will produce remarkable results.
