Route Overview
LuiTours offers this route in 7 Days and 6 Days formats. The confirmed programmes begin with Machame Gate to Machame Camp or Machame Gate to Machame Camp and finish with Millenium Camp to Mweka Gate or Millennium Camp to Mweka Gate, using camping in mountain tents and the day-by-day mountain stages shown below.
Machame is a demanding camping route with steeper sections than Marangu and a more active trail rhythm than the longer western approaches. Its climb-high, sleep-low passage around Lava Tower supports acclimatization, while the longer 7-day option gives the body more time to adjust before the final ascent. A patient, deliberately slow pace remains essential throughout.
The route suits fit trekkers who want varied scenery, a hands-on mountain experience and highlights such as Shira Plateau viewpoints, Lava Tower, Barranco Valley and the Barranco Wall. The summit approach normally leaves Barafu at night, reaches Stella Point on the crater rim, and continues to Uhuru Peak before descending by the Mweka trail.
Machame at a glance
Varied landscapes, a challenging camping trail, useful climb-high sections and the iconic Barranco Wall make Machame a strong choice for well-prepared trekkers who prefer an active route.

Why We Recommend the 7-Day Itinerary
The 7-day Machame adds a crucial extra night at Karanga Camp (4,200m) between Barranco and Barafu. This additional acclimatization stage mirrors the advantage of the Lemosho 8-day route and meaningfully boosts summit readiness. For most climbers - particularly those without prior high-altitude experience - the 7-day option is the smarter, safer, and more enjoyable choice.

Best Time to Climb Machame
Kilimanjaro can be climbed year-round. Two dry seasons offer the best summit conditions. The long rains (April - May) and short rains (November) make the Machame trail's steep terrain particularly muddy and challenging. Machame is more exposed than Marangu - clear weather enhances the dramatic scenery that defines this route.
| Climate Zone | Altitude | Day Temp | Night Temp | Conditions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rainforest (Day 1) | 1,800-3,000m | 15-25 - C | 8-15 - C | Humid, possible afternoon rain |
| Heath & Moorland (Day 2) | 3,000-3,840m | 5-15 - C | 0-5 - C | Clear mornings, clouds in afternoon |
| Alpine Desert (Days 3-5) | 3,840-4,640m | 0-10 - C | -5-0 - C | Dry, thin air, intense UV |
| Arctic Summit (Day 6) | 4,640-5,895m | -10 - -5 - C | -15 - -25 - C | Arctic conditions, wind, ice possible |
Altitude Zones & Acclimatization
The Machame Route's key acclimatization advantage is the Lava Tower "climb high, sleep low" stage on Day 3 - the same physiological strategy that makes the Lemosho so effective. The 7-day option adds a Karanga Camp night for an even stronger acclimatization profile. Understanding each altitude zone prepares you to make good decisions on the mountain.
Diamox (Acetazolamide) - Our Guides' Recommendation
Many Machame climbers use Diamox (125-250mg twice daily, starting 2 days before the climb) as an acclimatization aid. It increases your breathing rate and accelerates the body's acclimatization response - particularly valuable on the Machame's steeper altitude gain profile. Consult your doctor before travel. Common side effects: increased urination and tingling in fingers/toes - both completely harmless. Do not take if allergic to sulphonamide drugs.
