Shira Plateau Kilimanjaro

The Shira Route reaches Kilimanjaro’s western highlands by vehicle and begins trekking on the Shira Plateau at roughly 3,500 metres. It crosses open volcanic moorland, joins the Lemosho trail near Shira 2, and then follows the Southern Circuit through Lava Tower, Barranco and Karanga toward the summit.

Starting high is the route’s defining challenge. Climbers miss the gradual rainforest ascent used on Lemosho, so the first stages require conservative pacing and close attention to altitude symptoms. Later climb-high, sleep-low sections improve the acclimatization pattern, but prior experience above 3,000 metres is valuable and the route is not the gentlest choice for a first high-altitude trek.

Shira suits fit walkers who want immediate access to the plateau’s wide volcanic scenery and understand the implications of a high starting point. Highlights include Shira Cathedral, views of Kibo across the plateau, Lava Tower and the Barranco Wall. The summit approach follows the Southern Circuit to Barafu, Stella Point and Uhuru Peak.

Shira at a glance

Remarkable plateau scenery and a distinctive high start reward prepared trekkers, while the rapid initial altitude gain demands careful pacing and honest assessment of prior altitude experience.

Daily Itinerary

The Shira Route: Begin at Altitude

The Shira Route's defining feature is its dramatic start: a 4WD vehicle drives you directly onto the Shira Plateau at 3,500m on Day 1 - bypassing the rainforest entirely and placing you immediately into the high moorland and volcanic landscape. From Shira 1 Camp, the route traverses the plateau east to Shira 2 (where it converges with the Lemosho Route) before following the full Southern Circuit over the Barranco Wall to the summit. Note: starting at 3,500m on Day 1 without lower-altitude acclimatization is one reason we recommend prior altitude experience for this route.

Day1
Moshi 4WD Drive Shira Gate Shira 1 Camp
Drive to 3,500m - Walk to 3,610m 3 km walk - 2-3 hrs Arrive at Altitude by Vehicle

The trail reveals a distinct mountain zone, from forest and heath to open moorland or alpine terrain, and the measured pace supports acclimatization.

Guide's Tip: The transition from Moshi (900m) to Shira 1 (3,610m) happens in a single morning - a gain of over 2,700m in elevation, mostly by vehicle.
Day2
Shira 1 Camp Shira 2 Camp (via Shira Cathedral)
? 3,610m 3,840m 9 km - 4-5 hrs Ancient Shira Plateau

Starting from Shira 1 Camp, the journey leads to Shira 2 Camp (via Shira Cathedral) through the landscapes named in the program. The trail reveals a distinct mountain zone, from forest and heath to open moorland or alpine terrain, and the measured pace supports acclimatization.

Guide's Tip: Take the Shira Needle optional detour - it adds minimal time and the views are among the finest anywhere on the mountain.
Day3
Shira 2 Lava Tower (4,550m) Barranco Camp
? 3,840m 4,550m 3,960m 10 km - 5-7 hrs Critical Acclimatization Day

From Shira 2, you set out for Barranco Camp at a pace suited to the distance and planned activity. The trail climbs into sparse alpine desert around Lava Tower before descending to sleep lower. This deliberate gain and loss of altitude is an important acclimatization stage, and the pace is adjusted to how the group is responding. On the LuiTours & Safaris - Tanzania Safari & Kilimanjaro Experts, this is the main focus of day 3.

Guide's Tip: The altitude gain today is demanding, especially given you started at 3,500m on Day 1.
Day4
Barranco Camp Karanga Camp (via Barranco Wall)
? 3,960m 4,200m 5 km - 4-5 hrs Barranco Wall Scramble

Barranco Camp is the starting point for today’s journey to Karanga Camp (via Barranco Wall). The Barranco Wall is a hands-on mountain passage rather than a technical climb. Guides manage spacing and point out secure foot and hand placements before the route opens toward the Karanga Valley and Kilimanjaro’s southern glaciers.

Guide's Tip: Trekking poles are invaluable on the post-Wall traverse - the terrain is uneven and your legs will appreciate the extra support.
Day5
Karanga Camp Barafu Base Camp
? 4,200m 4,640m 4 km - 3-4 hrs Summit Preparation

Starting from Karanga Camp, the journey leads to Barafu Base Camp through the landscapes named in the program. The path crosses dry alpine terrain toward exposed Barafu Camp. Arrival is intentionally early enough for rest, hydration, an equipment check and a clear briefing before the summit attempt.

Guide's Tip: Organize every item of summit clothing and gear before lying down - arrange it in the exact order you'll put it on, so you can dress efficiently in complete darkness and cold.
Day6
SUMMIT NIGHT - Barafu Uhuru Peak (5,895m) Mweka Camp
4,640m 5,895m 3,100m ~15 km - 12-16 hrs Midnight Departure

The climb starts in the cool, dark hours and follows a slow, deliberate pace toward the crater rim or summit. Conditions, altitude and each trekker’s wellbeing determine progress; the descent then continues to the camp or gate named in the route.

Guide's Tip: At Stella Point, keep moving forward.
Day7
Mweka Camp Mweka Gate Moshi (Celebration!)
? 3,100m 1,640m 10 km - ~4 hrs Forest descent Moshi

Today’s stage links Mweka Camp with Moshi (Celebration!), giving the journey a clear sense of place from beginning to end. The descent leaves the alpine slopes for heath and then rainforest, with warmer air and denser vegetation returning quickly. Careful footwork matters on steeper or damp sections before the walk finishes at Mweka Gate. On the LuiTours & Safaris - Tanzania Safari & Kilimanjaro Experts, this is the main focus of day 7.

Guide's Tip: Recommended tip guidelines: Lead Guide $25-30/day - Assistant Guide $15-20/day - Cook $15/day - Porters $8-10/day.

Best Time to Climb Shira

Kilimanjaro can be climbed year-round. The Shira Route's plateau approach is fully exposed to weather from the very first day - on the open Shira Plateau, bad weather has nowhere to hide. Choosing the dry season is particularly important for this route, where the views of the volcanic landscape are central to the experience.

Altitude Zones & Acclimatization

The Shira Route's most important acclimatization consideration is its unusual start: arriving at 3,500m on Day 1 by vehicle eliminates the gradual altitude gain that other routes achieve in the rainforest zone. Understanding what this means for your body is essential to managing the route safely and successfully.

Shira Plateau Zone
3,500m - 3,840m (Days 1-2)
The Shira Route begins at altitude - there is no low-altitude warm-up. On Day 1, your body transitions from Moshi (900m) to Shira 1 (3,610m) in a single morning, primarily by vehicle. Mild to moderate altitude symptoms (headache, fatigue, reduced appetite) are common from the very first afternoon. Hydrate aggressively, eat well, and rest properly. Diamox started 2 days before the climb helps significantly on this route.
5-15 - C day / -2-5 - C night
Alpine Desert
3,840m - 5,000m (Days 3-5)
By Day 3, the "climb high, sleep low" acclimatization stage at Lava Tower (4,550m) is an important part of the route. The descent to Barranco afterward provides recovery time. At Barafu (4,640m) on Day 5, sleep disruption and reduced appetite can occur, but severe or worsening symptoms must never be ignored; consult your guide immediately.
0-10 - C day / -5-0 - C night
Arctic Summit Zone
5,000m - 5,895m (Summit Night)
Severe altitude. Only 50% of the oxygen available at sea level. Physical and cognitive capacity dramatically reduced. Your body has had 5 days to prepare - if you've followed the pacing guidance, hydrated properly, and listened to your guides, you are as ready as you can be. Move extremely slowly, breathe deeply and rhythmically with each step. Stay within arm's reach of your guide at all times.
-10 - C to -25 - C - Wind chill possible to -35 - C
Diamox on the Shira Route - Our Recommendation

Because the Shira Route begins at 3,500m with no gradual lower-altitude approach, we recommend that climbers consider Diamox (125-250mg twice daily, starting 2 days before the climb). The drug accelerates your body's natural acclimatization by increasing breathing rate. Always consult your doctor before travel. Common side effects - increased urination and tingling fingers/toes - are harmless. Do not take if allergic to sulphonamide drugs.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Shira Route's vehicle approach was originally created to allow climbers to access the Shira Plateau - one of Kilimanjaro's most remote and dramatic landscapes - without the full 2-day approach through the western rainforest that the Lemosho Route uses. The 4WD track climbs to Shira Gate, placing you directly on the plateau and saving approximately one day of trekking. The trade-off is losing the gradual low-altitude acclimatization period that the Lemosho Route's forest days provide.
Both routes traverse the Shira Plateau and converge at Shira 2 Camp; from that point, they follow the same Southern Circuit toward the summit. Lemosho walks in through the western rainforest over two days, beginning lower and building altitude more gradually. Shira bypasses the rainforest by vehicle and begins around 3,500m, providing faster plateau access but a more abrupt first-day altitude change.
The Shira Route is better suited to climbers with some prior high-altitude experience, ideally having been above 3,000m without significant altitude issues. The immediate jump to 3,500m on Day 1 is a more challenging physiological start than most routes provide. We generally recommend Lemosho for first-time altitude trekkers because its rainforest approach builds elevation more gradually.
Arrive well rested, discuss previous altitude experience and health considerations with the guide team, and begin at a deliberately conservative pace. Prior acclimatization can help because the route starts around 3,500m. Medication such as acetazolamide should only be considered with qualified medical advice before travel.
The Barranco Wall experience is the same regardless of which route you approach from - it is an identical 300-metre hands-and-feet scramble. On the Shira Route, you tackle it on Day 4, after three days at altitude (starting higher than on Lemosho). Climbers are typically well-adapted by this point. No technical climbing experience or ropes are required. Your LuiTours guide will position you carefully at every difficult move. The Wall is one of the most memorable and exhilarating features of the Southern Circuit.
Absolutely - Kilimanjaro + Zanzibar is one of Africa's classic travel combinations.
